An immigrant’s journey, in letters

What must go through the mind of a young man who leaves his country and family to start from scratch somewhere else? Surely there’s culture shock, language barriers, and feelings of isolation mixed with the excitement of a new beginning. Experience the ups and downs of one man’s post-war immigration experience in this virtual exhibition: Christian Bennedsen – Scrapbook of a life in letters, launched recently by the Canadian Postal Museum of the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

A taste for the finer things

What often motivated the exploration of distant lands was a taste for finer things: gold, exotic spices, furs. So the path to western Canada was opened up to bring beaver pelts back to England to be fashioned into fancy top hats for the high society of the day. “Profit and Ambition – the Canadian Fur Trade, 1779-1821” is an exhibition that portrays the explorers, adventurers, and trappers who forged our country … and our taste for finer things.
